Central Scanning were approached by a customer with a ‘new from old’ requirement. The customer had a casting that had been in production for in excess of 20 years for which no drawings or CAD data existed. A new variant of the casting was required. Central Scanning digitized the original casting using Steinbichler digitizing equipment. The data was then processed and converted to an STL file. This data was fully surfaced in NX2 and the finished data supplied back to the customer.
The customer modified the NX2 data in house to the new required condition. The pattern equipment wasCNC cut directly from CAD data by Patterns and Dies Ltd in Stoke-on-Trent. The part was cast and Central Scanning then dimensionally verified the part using Steinbichler’s revolutionary T Scan Laser Scanner in conjunction with Steinbichler’s Comet Inspect software package.
The end result was that the customer was able to have a new product, based on an existing part with a fully verified casting supplied for in house machining, eliminating the need for expensive casting verification drawings.
