The Cod Piece Project!
LTL3D (www.ltl3d.co.uk) run by Mr Nigel Cluley contacted Central Scanning and asked if we could scan a North Sea Cod ! At first, we thought "what a strange request" and was he joking?
A week later and along came a Mr Cluley armed with his 800mm long cod, fresh from the fishmongers in ice. After nearly being sick with the smell of the fish, we layed it on a board and laser scanned it with our Steinbichler T Scan laser scanning system. Using this system meant that we did not have to apply any form of surface treatment to the fish nor touch it which meant that it’s shiny surface was not a problem for us and more importantly, the fish could be eaten afterwards!
After scanning, we processed that data and had 3off different ‘scaled’ versions machined. This is where Nigel from ‘larger than life 3d’ came into his own as he then painted the fish even applying a shiny surface finish to make them look ‘real and wet’. They were then mounted into an interactive display and are now in a museum in Norway.
A strange, but true requirement for which the Steinbichler T Scan was perfect for the task.
