Reviving a British Heritage: Craven Dunnill and Central Scanning Rebuild a Historic Pub through 3D Scanning
Central Scanning collaborates with Craven Dunnill to recreate the iconic Elephant and Castle pub in Wolverhampton, leveraging advanced 3D scanning technology to capture and replicate the pub’s original architectural elements with historical accuracy. This project was recently featured in a BBC article, highlighting its community and cultural impact.
The Challenge: Recreating Lost Heritage
The Elephant and Castle pub, a staple of Wolverhampton’s community and history, was unexpectedly demolished in 2001 before it could be listed as a heritage site. With little more than old photographs and a few remaining tile fragments, the challenge was to authentically recreate the pub to reflect its distinct 1960s appearance, including all its unique architectural features and imperfections.
The Solution: Precision 3D Scanning with Artec Space Spider
To meet this challenge, Central Scanning provided Craven Dunnill with the high-resolution Artec Space Spider and Artec Studio software. The Space Spider, known for capturing fine details and complex textures, was pivotal in digitising the surviving tile fragments and other architectural elements, ensuring that every detail was preserved in the restoration process.
Process: Meticulous Digitisation and Restoration
The project began with 3D scanning the remnants stored at a local museum. Craven Dunnill used the Artec Space Spider to scan these fragments, capturing the intricate details needed to rebuild the pub’s distinctive features. The scans were processed in Artec Studio, where they were meticulously registered and edited before being used as references for the reconstruction.
Blending Old and New Technologies
Craven Dunnill has a long history of restoring significant UK sites, combining traditional craftsmanship with new technologies. For the Elephant and Castle, they used CNC machining and hand-finishing techniques alongside 3D scanning to ensure the tiles and other decorative elements were recreated authentically.
Outcome: A Cultural Revival with Modern Technology
The result was a faithfully restored Elephant and Castle pub that reopened its doors as part of the Black Country Living Museum’s Forging Ahead exhibit. This project not only brought back a beloved local landmark but also showcased how modern technology could serve historical preservation.
Reflections
This collaboration highlights Central Scanning’s commitment to leveraging technology for cultural and historical preservation. The project underscores the potential of 3D scanning to maintain the legacy of heritage sites, providing a bridge between past craftsmanship and future technologies.
Encouraged by the success of this project, Craven Dunnill plans to continue exploring 3D scanning for future restoration projects, potentially expanding into full-body scans for more complex architectural elements. Central Scanning remains dedicated to supporting such innovative applications of its technology.
